Here’s how to turn shop bought par baked baguettes into some next level mozzarella stuffed garlic bread! It’s super easy to make, packed full of flavour & goes with pretty much everything.

mozzarella stuffed garlic baguettes

You know those ready made garlic baguettes that you get in the supermarket that are filled with garlic butter? Well this is a homemade version of them & they’re packed full of garlic, parsley & parmesan butter and a whole load of mozzarella! And they’re made with par baked baguettes, to significantly cut down on prep time. Although you can make your own baguettes if you like, of course!

Making homemade garlic baguettes is surprisingly easy! As we’re using shop bought baguettes, all we need to do is cut them into slices, like a hassle back potato. Then we spread on some homemade garlic butter, stuff with cheese & top with parmesan then chuck it in the oven & wait 20 minutes or so! This is a fantastic side dish to whip up during the week, to serve with pasta, lasagne or pizza but it also works really well as an appetizer or snack.

What You’ll Need

  • Par Baked Baguettes – You can buy par baked baguettes in most supermarkets. However, if you can’t find them, a French stick will work as well, You’ll need to cut this in half though, so that it fits onto a baking tray.
  • Garlic Butter – We’re making our own garlic butter! For this you’ll need butter, fresh garlic, parmesan, parsley & lemon juice.
  • Cheese – Mozzarella is the most popular choice of cheese for cheesy garlic bread, as it melts the best! I’d recommend using a low moisture mozzarella, that can be cut/shredded. Feel free to use a different melting cheese, like a mature cheddar or Monterey Jack instead.

How To Make Cheesy Garlic Bread Baguettes

This batch of garlic bread is super quick to make as we’re using par baked baguettes! The garlic butter only takes a few minutes to blend in a food processor, assembly involves slicing open the bread & filling with butter & cheese and baking only takes 25 minutes…

  1. Garlic Butter
We’re making a quick homemade garlic butter by blending softened butter with fresh garlic, grated parmesan, fresh parsley & a splash of lemon juice. Plus some salt & pepper of course.
  2. Slice Bread
The baguettes for our garlic bread are cut open like when you make hassle back potatoes. To do this, we make slices into the baguettes, spaced 1″ apart and your knife should cut through around 2 thirds of the way through the bread. A serrated bread knife works best!
  3. Assembly
To assemble, we spread a generous amount of garlic butter into each of the cuts that we made in the bread then stuff cheese inside, on top of the butter. We need to do this carefully, so that we don’t break the bread. Although it’s not a big deal if this does happen, as you can just stick the bread back together using the butter & cheese!
  4. Baking
Once assembled, we top the baguettes with grated parmesan, wrap each one in foil then bake at 200°c/392°f for 15 minutes until the cheese is melty. Then we unwrap the garlic bread to expose the top then continue baking for another 5-10 minutes until the bread & cheese are both golden brown.

Serving Suggestions

Homemade cheesy garlic bread goes exceptionally well with pretty much any pasta dish or pizza! However, it’s also good eaten on its’ own as an appetizer or as a side dish to serve alongside salads, grilled chicken & pork chops, homemade soup, mussels in cream sauce, garlic prawns & loads more.

To cook homemade garlic bread in an Aga, bake in the roasting oven, on the second from bottom set of runners.

Can cheesy garlic bread baguettes be prepared ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare garlic bread baguettes ahead of time! To do this, prepare the baguettes by filling them with the butter & cheese then chill in the fridge for up to 2 days before baking. I’d recommend covering the baguettes with clingfilm so that your fridge doesn’t smell garlicky!

Equipment

  • Food Processor
  • Large Baking Tray

Ingredients

Garlic Butter

  • 150 g Unsalted Butter (Softened)
  • 30 g Finely Chopped Parsley
  • 10 g Grated Parmesan (Plus Extra For Topping)
  • 3 Garlic Cloves (Grated/Finely Chopped)
  • 2 tsp Lemon Juice

Garlic Bread

  • 2 Par Baked Baguettes (See Notes)
  • 150 g Low Moisture Mozzarella (Shredded)

Instructions

Garlic Butter

  • Add the butter, parsley, grated parmesan, garlic & lemon juice into a food processor, season with salt & pepper then blend until smooth.
  • Give the butter a taste to check the seasoning then add more salt & pepper as needed, blitzing again to combine. If you'd prefer a stronger garlic flavour, add more in now as well.
  • Transfer the garlic butter to a bowl then set to one side until needed.

Garlic Bread

  • Preheat an oven to 200°c/180°c fan (392°c/356°f).
  • Use a sharp serrated knife to cut the bread into 1 inch thick slices but don't cut all the way through! Stop cutting when you've cut around ⅔ of the way through the bread. Like when you cut a hassle back potato!
It's not a big deal if a slice of bread does break off! Just stick the bread back together.
  • Spread a generous amount of garlic butter into each slice/incision, being careful not to break the bread.
  • Next, stuff each cut/slice of bread with mozzarella then grate a generous amount of parmesan on top of the baguettes.
Don't worry if any cheese is sticking out of the bread, it will melt inside as the bread bakes.
  • Wrap each baguette in their own piece of foil, place onto a baking tray then bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, until the cheese is melty.
  • Next, unwrap the garlic bread to expose the top but keep each baguette inside the foil then bake for another 5-10 minutes until the cheese is crisp & golden brown.
  • Once cooked, serve the garlic bread whilst it's still warm & the cheese is melty!

Notes

1. To Cook In An Aga – Bake the garlic bread in the roasting oven, on the second from bottom set of runners.
2. Par Baked Baguettes – This garlic bread is made from the par baked baguettes that you can get from the supermarket. If you can’t find these though, you could use a French stick instead (cut in half!) then reduce the baking time slightly.
3. Cheese – I used a low moisture mozzarella for my garlic bread as it melts really well! You could swap this out for a different like cheddar or Monterey Jack instead. It’s best to shred/grate your own cheese instead of buying pre grated as it will melt better.
4. Garlic Butter – This recipe makes plenty of garlic butter, so if you’ve got any leftover you serve it with your garlic bread!
5. Prepping Ahead Of Time – This garlic bread can be prepared ahead of time! To do this, assemble the garlic bread then chill it in the fridge for up to 2 days before baking. I’d recommend covering the bread with clingfilm so that your fridge doesn’t smell of garlic!
