Apple Sauce For Pork
Here’s how to make a quick & easy homemade apple sauce to serve with pork. It’s perfectly sweet, tangy & takes very little time to make!

If you’re looking for a delicious apple sauce that’s quick & easy to make and goes great with roast pork then you’re in the right place! This stuff’s super tasty & takes less than 30 minutes to make from scratch. It’s so much better than shop bought!
The key to making a really good apple sauce, starts with the apples that you use. I tend to go with bramley apples as this is the classic choice for apple sauce but feel free to use whatever is in season! Then to make an extra flavourful apple sauce, we’re going to be cooking the apples with butter, sugar, lemon juice & a pinch of sea salt. A pinch of cinnamon or ginger would make a nice addition as well.
What You’ll Need
- Apples – I like to use Bramley apples for my apple sauce as this is the classic option. Other cooking apples like Granny Smiths will also work or you could use a mix of cooking & eating apples.
- Sugar – Caster sugar works best for apple sauce as it has a more neutral flavour (this lets the apples’ flavour shine!). We’re adding this to taste, as different apples have different levels of sweetness.
- Butter – Adding butter to our apple sauce gives it a richer flavour & a glossy finish. I like to use unsalted butter then add in a pinch of sea salt but salted butter will work as well.
- Lemon – We’re adding a splash of lemon juice to our apple sauce which helps cut through the sweetness from the apples.
- Salt – A pinch of sea salt enhances the flavours from the apples.
- Water – Adding a small amount of water to the apples gives our sauce the perfect consistency. It also helps prevent the apples from sticking to the bottom of the pan as they cook.

How To Make Apple Sauce
A really good homemade apple sauce is surprisingly easy to cook & takes 30 minutes or less to make from scratch! Here, we simply chop up some apples, chuck them into a pan with sugar, butter, lemon juice, salt & a splash of water then cover with a lid & cook until soft. Then to finish, we give the sauce a taste to check the sweetness, adding in more sugar as needed then give the sauce a quick blitz with a stick blender. That’s it! Our apple sauce can now be served straight away or stored in the fridge until needed.
Step By Step Apple Sauce
- Cut your apples into quarters then remove the cores.
- Chop the apples into 2-3cm chunks then add into a large saucepan. There’s no need to peel the apples.
- Add sugar, butter, lemon juice, sea salt & water into the apples then set the pan over a low heat.
- Cover the pan with a lid then cook the apples until they have broken down into a thick sauce. This will take around 10 minutes. Make sure to stir the apples regularly.
- Give the apple sauce a taste to check the sweetness then add in extra sugar if needed. Continue cooking for another couple of minutes, to dissolve the sugar (if extra has been added).
- Take the pan off the heat then give the sauce a quick blitz with a stick blender. If you’d prefer a smoother sauce, pass it through a sieve as well.
- Serve the sauce immediately or leave to cool the store in the fridge until needed.

Serving Suggestions
This homemade apple sauce is especially good with roast pork (on a roast dinner) but also goes really well with pork belly, pulled pork & pork chops! You can also use apple sauce for baking with & it goes well with pancakes, waffles, ice cream & lots more.
