Large Saucepan
Stick Blender
- 1 kg Bramley Apples (Around 4 Large Apples)
- 80 g Caster Sugar (Or More To Taste)
- 50 g Unsalted Butter
- 50 g Water
- 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
- A Pinch Of Sea Salt
Cut the apples into quarters then trim off the core. Chop the apples into 2-3cm chunks then add into a large saucepan. There's no need to peel the apples.
Add the sugar, water, butter, lemon juice & salt into the apples then place a lid on the pan then set over a low heat.
Cook the apples, stirring regularly until they have broken down into a thick sauce. Give the apples a taste, to check their sweetness then add in more sugar as needed. Continue cooking for another couple of minutes, to dissolve the sugar then take the pan off the heat. The sauce will take around 10 minutes to cook! Give the sauce a blend with a stick blender, until smooth then transfer to a bowl & serve. If you'd prefer a smoother sauce, pass it through a sieve before serving.
1. To Cook On An Aga - Cook the apples on the simmering plate.
2. Apples - Bramley apples work brest for apple sauce although they tend to be quite tart. I'd recommend starting with 80 grams of caster sugar then adding in more as required. I don't bother peeling my apples as this gives the sauce extra flavour.
3. Blending - If you don't have a stick blender, you can use a jug blender or food processor to blend the sauce. Alternatively, you could leave the sauce chunky (I'd recommend peeling the apples if you do this).
4. Storage - Once cool, apple sauce should be stored in the fridge & is best eaten within 5 days.
