What You’ll Need

  • Frozen Berries – Any frozen berry will work for this compote & I like to use a mix of different berries. For this recipe, I used equal amounts of strawberries, raspberries & blueberries.
  • Sugar – We’re using caster sugar for this compote & we’re adding it in to taste.
  • Lemon Juice – A splash of lemon juice helps cut through the sweetness from the berries & intensifies their flavour. It also helps thicken up the compote.
  • Sea Salt – A pinch of sea salt brings out the flavours in our compote.

How To Make Mixed Berry Compote

This berry compote uses frozen berries, so it can be made all year round! It’s also incredibly easy to make. It’s just a case of cooking berries in a pan with sugar, lemon juice & a pinch of salt, until thick!

  1. Berry Prep
This compote uses frozen berries, so there’s no need to defrost them first. However, if you’re using strawberries, like me then you might need to let them defrost slightly so you can cut the bigger ones in half.
  2. Cook To Dissolve Sugar
To cook our compote, we add our frozen berries into a large pan, along with sugar, lemon juice & a pinch of sea salt. We then cook this mix over a low heat, to defrost the berries & to dissolve the sugar. At this point, I like to give the compote a taste then add in more sugar if needed.
  3. Reduce To Thicken
Once the sugar has dissolved, we turn the heat up to medium, bring the compote to a simmer then cook until the liquid has reduced & thickened. This step will take around 8-10 minutes. The longer you cook the compote, the thicker it will become.
  4. Cool & Store
Now that our compote is cooked, we need to let it cool then we can transfer it to an airtight container & store it in the fridge until needed.

Serving Suggestions

This homemade mixed berry compote is super versatile & goes great with a wide range of dishes, mainly desserts & some breakfast dishes. You can serve compote with pancakes & waffles, on top of a breakfast yogurt bowl, with cheesecakes, on ice cream or alongside a creamy panna cotta. You get the idea!
